Miracle Grow

A futuristic concept, and a comfort to people in need of body parts is presented by Josie Glausiusz in her article titled “The Big Idea: Organ Regeneration” in National Geographic Magazine in March 2011. Thousands of people in the United States are in need of replacing organs which are in terrible condition. However, organs are short in supply and the organ donated must closely resemble the patient’s part. Scientists have been developing a new bio-artificial way of re-creating organs straight from the cells themselves. 30 people have already received bladders grow from cells taken from the damaged bladder. In order to grow these bladders, scientist use cells from the damaged organ and expose them to a collagen based scaffold in a Petri dish. The scientists then allow the cells to grow around the scaffold, this process takes six to eight weeks.
This new technology will bring 18 deaths per day caused by organ failure down, and will most certainly help in furthering the human life expectancy. This will also be consolidation for those in need of essential parts, and prevent the need of organ donors.

How oil breaks fish hearts

We can all agree that oil spills in the oceans are bad for the environment and that they have a negative effect on numerous species. It’s known that they kill fish and other species that people rely on for food and other supplies. But how does crude oil kill fish? Most would say it gums up the gills, and that is true, but it is not entirely the only way. Beth Mole reports for (Sciencenews.org). Marine scientist Barbara Block of Stanford University uncovered just how crude oil kills fish.
There have been several oil spills over the past decade, the worst of which happened in 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil kills the fish by getting into their cardiovascular system and causing their heart, to function either to slowly or to faster. Also, the oil disrupts the brain signals throughout the body causing the fish to go into shock. Block tested this in a lab on cells so no living organisms were killed during her tests. Knowing this could help scientist better understand what affects crude oil spills have on the environment.
